Summer School "Romanesque Village Churches"

On 23 April the summer school "Romanesque Village Churches" started in Merseburg (Saxony-Anhalt).

The seminar was hosted by the European Romanesque Center and funded by the TRANSROMANICA Association.

It contained a guided tour through Merseburg Cathedral as well as numerous lectures and presentations.

Results of recent European research were presented. Furthermore, Romanesque village churches in Saxony-Anhalt had been investigated on-site along with the study of written sources.

There were 4 different sessions according to the different disciplines that were presented by scholars of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg:

  • History: Sources on manorialism and village communes
  • Building history: Romanesque village churches in Saxony-Anhalt
  • Archaeology: Village churches and the cathedral in Archaeology
  • Theology: Spiritual spaces at the Romanesque Road

A presentation of the TRANSROMANICA network on 23 April was followed by a public lecture on "The Village Church in the Era of Cathedrals" by Prof. Dr. Leonhard Helten.
