Castle Allstedt – Allstedt

As early as the 9th century the castle is referred to as ‘Altstedi Castle’ in the Hersfeld tithe register. Since the place name Allstedt was first mentioned in 777, we may assume that the castle existed as early as 780. Up to the time of the Staufer dynasty, this motte castle was favoured by German rulers as a residence and place for issuing documents, later passing into the possession of other owners. The oldest sections of the core castle are in the northern wing, although these are now concealed by masonry. The present appearance of the castle buildings was basically shaped between the 15th and the 16th centuries.
