CHURCH OF SAINT PETER OF RIBAS ALTAS – MONFORTE DE LEMOS

INTRODUCTION

This church is situated in Monforte de Lemos, the geographical heart of the Ribeira Sacra.

HISTORY

The oldest documentation preserved dates back to the 11th century, where the donation of this cenobium to the Abbott of Samos is recorded. The current building dates back to the end of the 12th century and early 13th century with subsequent refurbishments.

ARCHITECTURE AND FURNITURE

The main nave, formed by two bodies, is covered by a barrel vault in one while in the other, that closest to the façade, it is covered by a gabled wooden roof; the semicircular apse is covered by a semi-vault, leaving the barrel vault for the straight section. It still preserves the continuous stone bench and paving. The main door has a simple structure, with a semicircular archivolt and rectangular cross-section that rests on imposts with a moulded front. The south door, which currently gives way to the sacristy, has a lintel with two small bilobed arches profiled by a semicircular border of small blind arches. Various arrow-holes and corbels can also be observed in the exterior of the temple.
